Salento has evidence of human presence since remote antiquity; examples are: Romanelli Cave (Paleolithic) and Zinzulusa Cave (Pliocene) in Castro, the Deer Cave “Grotta dei Cervi” (detected pictographs dating back to 3000-4000 BC) in Porto Badisco, the Cave of Poetry “Grotta della Poesia” (with inscriptions on the walls starting from Messapian age) in Roca Vecchia. Many other naturally beautiful caves can be visited by land or sea, located along the Ionian-Adriatic coastline, from Porto Selvaggio up to Torre dell’Orso.

Pre-Roman are the first settlements of which there is secured memory. The people who lived there are called Messapian, probably of Illyrian origin and had extensive contacts with the Greek world. The settlements extend into the three provinces of Salento: Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto.

Alezio, in which territory is situated our farmhouse, where the apartments are offered to guests, was one of the Messapian centres recorded by ancient Greek and Latin historians. Numerous findings were discovered overtime, some of which can be admired in the local museum. Other important Messapian centres in the province of Lecce are: Castro, Cavallino, Lecce, Muro Leccese, Nardò, Roca, Rudiae, Ugento, Vaste, etc..

Since the Roman era it passes with no interruption to Lombard, Byzantine, Spanish and French era.

The many rural villages have gradually developed over time, becoming towns and cities. They often have retained significant signs of different eras. Among these particularly interesting towns and cities, besides the best-known centers such as Lecce, Gallipoli, Otranto and the other previously mentioned, there are: Alessano, Casarano, Cupertino, Galatina, Maglie, Parabita, Specchia, Tricase, Tuglie and many others. Some of them, like Tuglie and Parabita, to which is added Sannicola, are situated on Salento hills, that surround our farmhouse.

Throughout the territory, there are plenty of local entertainment and fun, especially in seaside towns (such as Gallipoli, Otranto, Porto Cesareo, Santa Cesarea Terme), for youngsters and less youngsters. Added to these there are festivities and feasts, especially in summer time, it can be said that there is no day without its event. All occasions tempting to learn about the history, traditions, flavors of many often small but ancient towns with architectural, artistic and natural beauty, such as churches, monuments, palaces and vestiges of the past, sometimes truly amazing.

The road network is excellent, freeways and state roads allow you to quickly reach any location.

Our farmhouse, in the quiet of the countryside and away from the hustle of seaside resorts, is located in a strategic position, also in terms of viability.
